A pair of huanghuali horseshoe-back armchairs. 17th century

The curving top rail continuing in a wide sweep to the arms, sloping down above a rounded back post formed by the upper extension of the rear legs and the tapering side posts, and extending in a curved hook beyond the corner post with shaped spandrels, the backsplat carved with a beaded ogival ruyi cloud-head medallion, the rectangular mat seat supported on legs joined by gently curved aprons with long spandrels, and by stepped stretchers with a footrest at the front.
