Due to the great international demand for his paintings, Koekkoek barely travelled throughout the 1850s, and instead only worked in his studio tower in Kleve. In 1857, one last journey took him to Saxon Switzerland, where he created numerous sketches. He visited Dresden, Schandau, Königstein on the Elbe and Wartburg Castle above the town of Eisenach, famed for its connection to Martin Luther, among other places. Several paintings from 1858 bear witness to his impressions of this study trip. In these works, he once again demonstrates the great skill for which he was admired throughout Europe. These were Koekkoek's last works before a stroke rendered him unable to paint any longer.
This painting is listed in the new catalogue raisonné under the number 58/40.
