A rare Sinotibetan gilt copper repoussé figure of Dharmatala, an attendant of the 16 arhat, sitting in bhadrasana on two cushions, holding a fly whisk and kalasha, clad in long flowing robes, the hair pulled into a topknot, carrying a backpack of texts on his back and accompanied by a tiger. Base open. 18th century.

According to Chinese Buddhist belief Dharmatala is the deified form of the famous Chinese monk and translator Xuan Zang, who travelled to India in the 7th century and brought back many Buddhist scriptures.
