A Ki-Seto chawan. Mino area. 17th century

A Ki-Seto chawan with thin horizontal ridges to the outside and an inverted foot covered entirely with a beige-coloured crackled glaze with green splashes (tanpan) to the inside, outside and foot. Mino area. 17th century. Wooden box inscribed on the lid Ki-Seto chawan, and with an inscription to the inside of the lid reading "Akatsuki" (dawn) Takahiro and kaô Momoyama Keichô guchi yon sun takasa ni sun yon bu.
Height 7.7 cm; diameter 12,5 cm

The inscription is by Mitsui Takahiro (1849-1919), the 8th-generation head of the southern branch of the Mitsui family. He was an accomplished tea master with the name of Shôrai and founder of the Kôetsu Society in Kyoto. He gave the chawan the name of "Dawn" and dated the chawan to the Keichô era (1596-1615).
