A large dated Amberg mortar

Cast bronze with partially mattified dark brown patina with traces of green corrosion. Cylindrical form with convex concave moulded base and flared moulded rim. Cast with a cartouche inscribed in majuscule "CHRISTOPH KRÖSEL APODE IN AMBERG M DC X XX VI". A heraldic cartouche to the reverse with a lion rampant and various utensils, the borders with acanthus bands. Dolphin handles with acanthus appliques. H 41.4, D 39 cm. Weight 92,0 kg. Including a later pestle.
