A dated mortar with a large figural frieze

Golden brown cast bronze with fine honey coloured natural patina. Cylindrical form with sloping rim and pronounced, solid base. Cast with a wide figural frieze, possibly depicting the story of Joseph. The rim with a broad banderole inscribed with the patron and casting date "DANILE CRECHER 1598". Facetted angular handles. A later engraving to the underside. H 16.8, D 16.5 cm. Weight 5.6 kg.
