An unusual mortar with dog's head handles

Golden brown cast bronze with dark brown patina. Richly decorated with two central cartouches with mythological motifs, a portrait of a Roman emperor in profile surrounded by a laurel wreath, and finely cast raised grotesque mascarons all beneath ancient coin reliefs. Both sides with crowned coats of arms with crossed swords. The handles formed as dogs' heads. H 12.1, D 15.5 cm. Weight c. 4.4 kg.
Attributed to France or Northern Italy, 16th/early 17th century.
