A large French monastery mortar with ram's head handles

Cast bronze with dark brown patina. Of squat, tapering form with a stepped base and broad protruding flared rim. With bands of horizontal moulding. Winged cherub's heads on both sides beneath a foliate frieze and a broad band inscribed in capital letters "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM LAN 1750". Some indentations to the rim. H 22.5, D 35 cm. Weight c. 32 kg.
