A large Netherlandish apothecary mortar

Thick cast bronze with golden brown patina. Bell-shaped form with moulded base. With three bands of moulding and handles formed as wolf's heads. The rim with a broad band inscribed in capital letters: "IC BENE GHEGOTEN INT IAER ONS HEEREN MCCCCCXIIII". The casting seam finely polished by the chaser, not visible on the interior due to usage related patina. Some greenish corrosion to the interior. H 22, D 29.6 cm. Weight c. 25 kg.
