A magnificent Gothic mortar with a vacant coat of arms

Cast bronze with natural golden brown patina. Of tapering form, six pointed ribs terminating in sculptural paw feet. Vacant coats of arms to both sides. Bands of fleur-de-lys between the feet. Two M-shaped handles. Some losses to the underside, either casting faults or wear related. H 21.3, D 20.5 cm. Weight c. 10 kg. The pestle presumably original.
Attributed to Nuremberg, 15th century.

By repute, the piece is said to originate from the ownership of the Austrian branch of the von Metternich family.
