An unusual one-handled mortar with a gold damascened cross

Cast bronze with dark brown patina, partially chased and with gold damascening (possibly later). Cylindrical form with protruding moulded rim and three ribs. Decorated on the front and on the back of the flat curved handle with gold cross motifs and two rosettes. H 17.4, D 19.3 cm. Weight c. 5.8 kg.
Southern Germany or Austria, 15th/16th century.
