An unusual florentian mortar with lion's head mascarons

Cast bronze with dark brown patina. Of tapering form with a flaring moulded base and rim. Scroll handles with applied braided décor. Decorated beneath the rim with five lush laurel garlands and ladies heads above raised lion's head mascarons. The rim inscribed with the name of the caster, the work's origin, and the date in capital letters: "OPVS IVLIANI DENAVI FLORENTINI MCCCC L XXXX IIII". H 15, D 19.5 cm. Weight c. 7.5 kg.
Florence, attributed to Giuliano Mariotto de'Navi, 1494.
