A large kitchen mortar with a partridge and a cockerel

Cast bronze with dark brown patina. Bell-shaped mortar with a protruding moulded base and rim. Decorated with two depictions of birds perching on branches, fine bands of acanthus scrolls and arabesques, and four sunflowers. H 22.6, D 26 cm. Weight c. 19 kg.
Attributed to Rome, late 16th century.
