An Italian Renaissance mortar with an Annunciation scene

Cast bronze with slightly mottled dark brown shimmering patina. Bell-shaped form with a moulded base and stepped protruding rim. The display side decorated with a depiction of the Annunciation, the reverse with a large conjoined monogram “MS” beneath a floral crown. Two caryatid handles. Minor dents to the surface. H 16.7, D 21 cm. Weight c. 9.1 kg.
Attributed to Central Italy, possibly Rome, 16th/17th century.
