A pair of Buddhist bronze altar vases with gilt-wood lotus flowers and leaves. Late 19th/early 20th century

The vases with a trumpet-shaped neck and lion's head handles, each with twelve lotus stalks. Lotus leaves and flowers of this type were placed in a pair of altar in place of real flowers and symbolize the various stages of life. Restored. (2)
Height of the vases 28.7 cm; the flowers of various sizes: tallest 116 cm, smallest 47 cm

Ein solches Vasenpaar stand zusammen mit einem Paar Kerzenleuchtern und einem Weihrauchgefäß auf dem Altar vor dem Kultbild. Statt frischer Blumen war es auch üblich Gebinde von Lotos aus Holz oder vergoldetem Kupfer in diese Vasen zu stecken. Neun oder mehr Lotosstängel mit Knospe bis hin zum welken Blatt symbolisierten den Kreislauf des Lebens.
