A softwood netsuke of a deer. 18th century

Carved out of hinoki wood, the deer stands with its legs placed close together and the head lowered, the wood grain cleverly incorporated into the strongly stylised representation. Traces of a beige-coloured finish. A beautiful, natural patina to the arched back. Natural himotoshi.
Height 10 cm

In her catalogue entry for a similar netsuke from the Bushell Collection in LACMA, Los Angeles, Hollis Goodall draws the motivic parallel between the stylised, highly arched back and the head shape of the god of luck Jurôjin who is often depicted together with a deer.

Provenance

Estate of Albert Brockhaus (1855 – 1921)
