A buffalo horn manjû. Second half 19th century

Domed, of rounded square shape. Carved in detailed relief on a sunken ground with Minamoto no Tametomo fighting a demon of the island of Onigashima. On the reverse, Taira Mochimitsu’s ship with billowing sails amongst undulating waves.
