A miniature gold statuette of a drinking dwarf

Gold and silver gilt model of a dancing dwarf with a grotesquely contorted face holding a beaker in one hand and a hunting horn in the other, his stomach formed from a blister pearl. Picked out in polychrome enamel, the hat with two rose-cut diamonds, the moulded vermeil plinth with winged putto head appliques and 24 foiled sapphires. The enamel with minor wear. Figure: H 6 cm. Total H 9.5 cm. Weight 132.14 g.
19th C., in the Baroque style.

It is not uncommon to find pearl figures like this based on the famous "Gobbi" statuette in the museum Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden. The plinth on which this figure stands is also inspired by Baroque models from this collection. Several features of the work speak for a later date, but primarily the pearl that decorates the figure's belly. Unlike in the examples in Dresden, it does not form the foundation of the artistic design. We would like to thank Professor Dirk Syndram and Dr. Ulrike Weinhold of the Grünes Gewölbe Dresden for their kind information.
