A Dutch mortar from 1650

Golden yellow cast bronze with dark golden shimmering patina and engraved and stamped decoration. Of tapering form with a broad, smooth rim and two dolphin handles. Decorated with two bands of foliate arabesques with stylised acanthus, tendrils, grotesques and vases of flowers. The upper section with a banderole inscribed on a snakeskin pattern background: “FRANCISCVS ROEN ANNO 1650”. Minor dents throughout, several losses to the underside. H 18, D 21.1 cm, weight c. 8.1 kg.
