A large Gothic double-handled mortar

Thickly cast bronze with silver-gold patina. Of tapering form resting on four wide bracket feet from which issue two shorter and two longer ribs. With a flaring base, flaring moulded rim and two angular, octagonally faceted handles. Some losses to the rim (possibly casting faults), the lower section slightly rounded due to use, the bases of the handles unevenly chased. H 20.1, D 19.3 cm, weight c. 7.6 kg.
Southern Germany or Alpine Region, 1st half to mid-15th C.
