A small Nuremberg single-handled mortar with engraved decoration

Golden brown cast bronze with honey coloured natural patina. Of tapering form resting on four paw feet decorated with mascarons from three of which issue vertical ribs. With flaring base and rim and an angular, octagonally faceted handle. The entire exterior decorated with delicate engravings of birds, foliage and tendrils. The base slightly rounded due to use, wear and minor dents throughout. H 14.5, D 12.6 cm, weight c. 2.2 kg.
15th C., the engravings presumably 19th C.
