A large Gothic single-handled mortar

Golden brown cast bronze with reddish brown patina. Of tapering form resting on three paw feet from which issue one shorter and two longer angular ribs. With slightly flaring moulded rim and an angular, octagonally faceted handle engraved with a braided ornament. With a later engraving to the rim: “XII/”. The lower section slightly rounded due to use, small dents to the edge and the exterior. H 20.5, D 17.1 cm, weight c. 5.3 kg. Includes a corresponding T-shaped pestle. L 28.5 cm.
