A signed Italian single-handled mortar

Thickly cast golden brown bronze with chocolate brown patina. Of tapering form with a protruding moulded base and flaring moulded rim. Decorated with a large coat-of-arms inscribed with the caster's name in Latin capital letters: “IACOBVS DOISEMONT GALLVS PERVSIA FC?” flanked on either side by winged angel's heads and two female pilaster figures. Uneven cast with porous surface, the base slightly rounded due to use, abrasions, some verdigris to the interior. H 14.6, D 18.6 cm, weight c. 6 kg.
Attributed to Jacob Doisemont Gallus, Perugia, late 15th / early 16th C.
