A rare late Gothic mortar by Giuliano Mariotto de' Navi

Thickly cast golden brown bronze with chocolate brown patina. Squat, tapering mortar on a moulded base with a flaring moulded rim. Decorated with acanthus leaf reliefs and inscribed around the rim in Latin capital letters: "OPVS IVLIANI MARIOCTI FLORENTINI MCCCCLXXXXVII". The two scroll handles with cord appliques. The inscription and the handles with minor wear. Traces of limescale in the deeper recesses of the decor. H 9.6, D 13.7 cm, weight c. 2.1 kg.
