A magnificent Baroque mortar by Dominicus Barborini

Heavy golden brown cast bronze with dark brown patina. Large bell-shaped mortar on a waisted base with a protruding flared rim. Decorated with several bands of moulding, acanthus leaves around the bulbous lower section and a foliate frieze. Each side with garlands strung from two winged cherub heads flanked by laurel leaves. Inscribed around the rim in Latin capital letters: "DOMINICVS BARBORINI PARMENSIS FECIT ANNO DOMINI MDCCLXXXIV". The handles formed as the heads of two women looking upwards. A cast crescent-shaped drainage channel in the upper rim. H 28.7, D 31.2 cm, includes an iron pestle, weight with pestle c. 24.4 kg.
Parma, 1784.

Domenico Barborini worked mainly as a bell caster in the North Italian city of Parma. Among other projects, he cast the bells for the churches of San Basilide, Santa Maria del Carmine, San Vitale and dei Serviti.
