A very fine bronze figure of the medicine Buddha Bhaishajyaguru. Ming dynasty, 15th century

Seated in meditation on a double-lotus base, the right hand extended in varadamudra holding a single myrobalan fruit between thumb and middle finger, the left hand in dhyanamudra holding a small bowl filled with three myrobalan fruits. The garments fall in crisp and elegant folds around the body. The face is finely cast with a serene expression, the hair dressed in regular rows of curls covering the head and ushnisha surmounted by a jewel. Traces of gilt-lacquer and red and green lacquer at the rim of the base.
