A pair of Japanese style lacquer wig cases

Ebonised and black lacquered wood with partially raised bronze lacquer decor with gold and reddish metal powder. The interiors painted red, one with additional aventurine powder. Ormolu mountings. Oblong boxes with domed lids decorated with hilly landscapes with exotic flowers and architecture. Finely chased ormolu latches. One case in the original condition, one in very good, restored condition. H c. 10, W 29, D 21.6 cm.
Attributed to a Parisian workshop, around 1730.

The Parisian Guillaume Martin, born in 1689, is known to have been able to produce lacquer decorations of this quality based on Japanese models through the recording of his stock in 1730. He is credited with being one of the founders of the large lacquer atelier whose products became famous under the name of "Vernis Martin".
