A Baphuon sandstone torso of a four-armed deity, probably Vishnu. Cambodia. Second half 11th century

Standing upright with athletic body, the hips covered by a sampot held together by ornamental belt and knotted at the back in a butterfly bow, the plain surface of the pocket at the left thigh contrasting with the various types of pleating. Mounted on a wooden stand.
Height 44.5 cm

Private collection, Meerbusch, purchased 1985 from Galerie de Blauwe Oliphant (Dr. Egidius Amkreutz), Maastricht
