Sailing ships by a fortress
Master VBL, second quarter 17th C.

Etched gold leaf against black ground. Monogrammed VBL lower centre. Ebonised walnut frame, H 16.5, W 21.3 cm.

The identity of the artist working under the monogram VBL is currently not known. The majority of the around 90 panels attributed to him are located in Italy, but his workshop is thought to have been in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. This assumption is based on the existence of two cabinet panels with German inscriptions that are signed by the artist and were created for the mayor of Freiburg in Western Switzerland in 1625.
