Saint Cecilia
Daniel and Ignaz Preissler, Kronstadt, early 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with opaque and transparent lacquer pigments in camaieu technique, washed and etched, against gold leaf. Some minute backed/restored losses to the lower third of the painting. Ebonised and gilded softwood frame, H 42, W 33 cm.

Both Daniel and Ignaz Preissler were skilled in the exact reproduction of engravings. In this case, the work depicts a mirrored version of a sheet by the engraver Johann Jakob Kilian (1678 - 1705) of Augsburg. The church in the right background could be the basilica of St. James in Prague, which was furnished with a magnificent organ in 1705.
