The Virgin at Prayer
China, second half 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments against black ground. In the original wooden frame with black-grounded lacquer decor, H 47, W 36.5 cm.

The famous prototype for this depiction of the Virgin Mary is Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's (1617 - 1682), "La Dolorosa", now housed in the Prado in Madrid (acc. no. P00977). The Chinese artist produced a variation of a Christian motif that is not immediately recognisable as such. Following the outlawing of Christianity by Emperor Yongzheng in 1724, these motifs were frowned upon.
