The good shepherdess
China, second half 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments, highlighted in golden bronze. With minor localised retouches. In the original wooden frame with black-grounded lacquer decor, H 40.5, W 30.5 cm.

The Chinese artist produced a variation of a Christian motif that is not immediately recognisable as such. Following the outlawing of Christianity by the Emperor Yongzheng in 1724, motifs like these were frowned upon.
