Summer and Winter
France, around 1800.

Glass panel painted on reverse in opaque pigments. Walnut veneered and gilded frame, H 30, W 24 cm.

These two portraits, presumably of a married couple, correspond to a type of depiction that was often used in reverse glass paintings in the Black Forest/Eastern France region. They were certainly inspired by engraved designs.
