Two Chinoiseries
Piemont, 18th C.

Glass panels painted on reverse in opaque and transparent pigments with poplar wood backing. Gilded wooden frames, H 24.5, W 27.5 cm and H 26, W 28.7 cm.

The motifs of these two reverse glass paintings were inspired by the chinoiseries of François Boucher. Before his career as court painter to King Louis XIV, Boucher earned his living as a printmaker and designer of book illustrations. Around 1726 - 1728 he was employed by Jean de Jullienne (1686 - 1766) and produced etchings. This activity even financed his journey to Italy in 1728.
