A Ko-Karatsu chawan. Dozono kiln, Matsuura, Hizen province. Late 16th century

Of amikasa-gata type (straw hat shape) with sloping walls, on a small, round foot ring. Matt, dark olive-green glaze (drops partially knocked off) of the kawakujira (whale skin) type, leaving the lower part and the foot exposed. Several old restorations to the rim (kintsugi). Wooden box, inscribed on the back of the lid: Ko-Karatsu Dozono Azuchi Momoyama jidai no saku (Old Karatsu Dozono, work of the Azuchi-Momoyama period). Silk bag (shifuku).
Height 6.8 cm; width 13 cm

According to the former japanese owner, the shards were excavated in the abandoned Dozono kiln in Matsuura, Saga Prefecture in Kyushu.
