A small Chosen Karatsu chawan. Hizen province. Edo period, 17/18th century

Rising almost vertically with a slightly depressed rim on a wide foot ring, the dark, porous shard covered with a thin black glaze and a thick white glaze with a wide-meshed crackle. Wooden box, on the lid a paper strip inscribed: Chosen Karatsu; to the base a paper label with the Japanese collection number 113. Shifuku.
