A MID 15TH CENTURY TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF THE MOURNING VIRGIN, PROBABLY UTRECHT

Terracotta, remains of original polychromy, probably Utrecht, mid 15th century (GR 2.139)
Minor wear. Height 23.5 cm.

A mid 15th century terracotta figure of the Mourning Virgin, probably Utrecht. Carved three quarters in the round and with remains of an older polychromy. This fine sculpture presumably originally belonged to a group of the Lamentation or Entombment of Christ, which would explain why the lower part of the Virgin behind the body of Christ has not been fully carved.

Provenance

Previously Baron Rothschild collection, Paris. - 1972 purchased from Julius Böhler, Munich.
