A 17TH CENTURY NORTH ITALIAN IVORY DEPICTION OF THE FLOGGING OF CHRIST

Ivory, Northern Italy, presumably 17th C. (successor of Bologna-Susini) (GR2.249)
Fine vertical cracks, the front foot replaced. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 30.5 cm.

A 17th century North Italian ivory depiction of the Flagellation of Christ. Ivory carved in the round, boxwood. The figure of Christ on a wooden plinth is shown in a striding pose with his hands bound behind his back, in front of a half-length column. The movement, physiognomy and the style of the perizonium are all clearly inspired by Italian bronzes from the circle of Giovanni Bologna and Antonio Susini, however, the long-term appreciation and reception enjoyed by these artists makes it almost impossible to ascertain an exact date for this piece.
