Dutchman on a horse. Lacquer on wood. 19th century

With a stiff fan in his left hand, seated with legs crossed atop a number of blankets on the back of a horse, which, with head lowered, closed legs and swishing tail, carries him. Light wood, completely covered with coloured lacquer, primarily of brown tones with many layers of kinji, accentuated with gyobu and okibirame.
Height 9 cm

This depiction of a Dutchman looking in the opposite direction to his horse is probably inspired by the motif of the poet Pan Lang. The latter had grown so fond of Mount Hua - his exile - that on his return he rode backwards on his donkey in order to enjoy the sight of the mountain as long as possible. This charm of exile may also apply to the representation of the Dutch who lived far away from their homeland on Deshima in the bay of Nagasaki.
