An important Northern Italian Renaissance mortar for Bartolomeo Adomoli

Silvery brown cast bronze with golden brown patina. Bell-shaped form with waisted base and flaring rim. Decorated with finely rendered acanthus foliage, coiling snakes, and shellwork in high relief. The rim with a pattern of flowerheads and oval medallions. Both sides inscribed with the patron's name in capital letters: "BARTOLOMEO ADOMOLI". On either side a finely sculpted model of a man's head looking downwards forming the handles. A small breakage to the rim, a circular ridge to the underside (possibly from a former mounting). H 14.6, D 17.9 cm. Weight c. 5.3 kg.
Attributed to Veneto, first half 16th century.
