An Italian mortar with a depiction of the Holy Family

Golden brown bronze with natural patina. Both sides decorated with Christian depictions in rhomboid surrounds: The Holy Family and Christ with the implements of his Passion. The base decorated with a band of foliate arabesques. The short handles formed as heads above cross pattées. A horizontal crack to the underside, partially filled with lead solder. H 11.5, D 15.6 cm. Weight c. 2.9 kg. Including a corresponding pestle.
Attributed to Southern or Upper Italy, 16th/17th century.
