An ivory manjû. Mid-19th century

With a central plug, carved in sunken relief and finely engraved with a farmer lacing up a large sack. Dark-stained details. A tokkuri and a sake cup in fine engraving on the reverse. Signed Kôsai.
Diameter 4.6 cm

The two large kanji on the sack (kan nin) refer to patience. After a mistake - obviously caused by the sake indicated in the engraving on the reverse - the farmer ties up his mistake/sins in the large sack.
