A Gothic single-handled mortar

Yellow gold cast bronze with caramel coloured patina. Of tapering form resting on four stylised paw feet from which issue one shorter and three longer relief ribs. With broadly flaring moulded rim and an angular, octagonally faceted handle. The area around the handle irregularly chased, the exterior surface porous, the interior coated with pitch and with calcific deposits, some scratches and minor dents. H 17.5, D 16.2 cm, weight c. 3.9 kg. Includes a corresponding T-shaped pestle. L 28.5 cm.
