An unusual Gothic double-handled mortar

Thickly cast golden brown bronze with dark brown patina. Of cylindrical form with a protruding rim. Resting on four paw feet crowned with mascarons from which issue two shorter and two longer angular ribs. With two angular, octagonally faceted handles. The interior and exterior surfaces with some localised verdigris, minor scratches and dents. H 22.2, D 22.2 cm, weight c. 10.9 kg.
