A Shibayama-style ivory okimono of an elephant. Late 19th century

The richly caparisoned elephant on a flat base is surrounded by four karako carrying musical instruments and a flag, two more karako sitting on the back of the animal and playing a drum, the body and garments profusely inlaid with mother-of-pearl, glass, coral, tortoise shell and brass. Signed Hōshinsai and sealed Masanobu.
