The surroundings of Caudebec in Normandy
China, produced for the European market, around 1770.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. Minor localised losses of pigment to the margins. Gilded softwood frame, H 34, W 49.2 cm.

This finely rendered reverse glass painting shows a view of Caudebec overlooking the Seine. The depiction follows the sheet "Première vue des environs de Caudebec en Normandie" by the Breton engraver Yves Marie Le Gouaz (1742 - 1816) after Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807).

The counterpart "Seconde vue des environs de Caudebec en Normandie" is in the Vitromusée Romont/Switzerland.

Both reverse glass paintings have sliders on the back, typical of Chinese objects, with which the glass can be easily unframed.
