Queen Charlotte of England
(born Duchess of Mecklenburg, 1744 - 1818)
China, Guangzhou/ Canton, for the English market, late 18th / early 19th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. The glass panel slightly uneven. In a later gilded softwood frame, H 39.4, W 29.3 cm.

This reverse glass painting reproduces the mezzotint by the English portrait painter Thomas Frye (1710 - 1762), entitled "Her Most Excellent Majesty Charlotte Queen of Great Britain", as a mirror image. The print, one of Thomas Frye's best-known works, was created on the occasion of the Coronation in 1761, was copied by a large number of engravers and became a popular motif for souvenirs of all kinds.

In 1740 Thomas Frye imported kaolin from the English colony of Virginia and founded the Bow porcelain factory, which he ran for almost 20 years and where he also worked as a porcelain painter. However, his health suffered so much that he retired from the business in 1759 and from then only produced mezzotints.
