Lady Charlotte Finch
China, Guangzhou/ Canton, produced for the English market, late 18th / early 19th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. Ebonised, gilded and sanded softwood frame, H 47, W 36.5 cm.

This reverse glass painting follows the mezzotint of the English engraver John Faber the Younger (1684 - 1756), born in The Hague, after a painting by John Robinson (1715 - 1745).

Lady Charlotte Finch (1725 - 1813) was the governess of the children of King George III and Queen Charlotte (née Duchess of Mecklenburg) as of 1762. The painting was probably created shortly before her marriage in 1746 to William Finch, a British diplomat.
