China, 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments and gilded. With minor localised retouches. Painted wooden frame, H 17.9, W 12.9 cm.

Depicted is the Chinese goddess Xīwángmǔ. In Chinese mythology, she is the Queen Mother of the West, the highest-ranking goddess in the Daoist pantheon. In her magical garden in the mythical Kunlun Mountains grow the peaches of immortality. She is accompanied by a stag, a white tiger, the three-legged blue bird, the nine-tailed fox or the hare.
