A Ko-Karatsu chawan. Hizen province. Edo period, 18th century

Of almost spherical shape on a wide foot ring, spirally twisted on the inside (kaijiri kodai (spiral shell foot)), the
dark body with a coarsely encrusted surface on the outside of the upper half, covered with an ash glaze with whitish spots and metallic particles, matt beige and white glaze on the inside. Old wooden box with label inscribed: Ko-Karatsu chawan.
Height 8.4 cm; diameter 11 cm
